In a last-minute development, the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) has declared Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gillani as its Prime Ministerial candidate in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).

Earlier, it was reported that the party had decided that Shah Ghulam Qadir, a stalwart of the party in the region, would be the next Prime Minister.

Tragically, not only did Barrister Gillani lose the recently held elections and was nominated to the National Assembly via a reserved seat, but even the decision to make him the premier was taken by the PML-N President, Nawaz Sharif.

The meeting that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened to announce Barrister Gillani as the new premier was attended by PML-N AJK President Shah Ghulam Qadir, his predecessor and former AJK premier Raja Farooq Haider, Rana Sanaullah, and senior PML-N leader Saad Rafique, among others. As expected, both Shah Ghulam Qadir and Farooq Haider opposed the decision.

The move to impose a decision taken in Islamabad on the people of POK has consequently exposed a rift in the PML-N in the region. Qadir has gone berserk, reminding the central leadership of Nawaz Sharif’s slogan ‘respect the vote’ (vote ki izzat do) that he had raised when sent packing in 2018 on shady allegations. The PML-N emerged as the single largest party by winning 25 of 38 directly contested seats. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 12, and the lone winning candidate of the Awami Dast-o-Bazu party joined........
