An Insipid Anniversary
There are occasions when people commit blunder after blunder. This happens not just to individuals but also to organisations or governments. Those who watch them wonder why even simple common sense escaped them to act so stupid! Not just being stupid, but sheer brazenness also drives people to make horrendous blunders. Even when they realise their blunders, arrogance and contempt of others would keep them from introspecting or stopping their slippery slope until the consequences hit them on the head. Those who manage to survive would then be surprised at how they could be so dumb to commit such Himalayan follies.
Governments realise their follies only after they are voted out ignominiously. Recall especially the last United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s last days, when almost everything it did was so ridiculously wrong. The government was ravaged by sensational scams like the solar case and bar bribery, the resignation of three ministers following serious allegations against them, the unending open spats between Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Congress state president VM Sudheeran, and attempts to hand over the ecologically sensitive Metran Kayal for commercial purposes even in the dying moments of that ministry. Even when they kept assaulting his image, Chief Minister Chandy smugly dismissed them as politically motivated or by a line that would later become a joke: “The law will take its course." The 2016 assembly elections saw the UDF’s rout and the near-end of many political careers.
The present Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, as it enters its third year, appears to be in the stupid and supercilious stage where the Chandy dispensation found itself. The latest in the unending series of CPI(M)’s brainless and boorish acts is the “martyr’s memorial” built for two people who died while making bombs. Kannur CPI (M) district secretary MV Jayarajan had no qualms about “consecrating” it as the Prime Minister did at Ayodhya’s Ram temple, even when the party’s state secretary MV Govindan kept away from the function even........
