Festive planning by ferry: the realities of an island Christmas

From midnight shopping sprees to ferry-dependent deliveries, Elle Duffy shares the joys and challenges of preparing for Christmas with a newborn and a storm on the horizon.

Three in the morning is an odd time to realise that Christmas is coming. But with a newborn in the house, that’s when I find myself getting into the festive spirit.

It turns out Christmas lyrics are at the forefront of my early morning repertoire when Cailean wants to tell me just how displeased he is that he isn’t being fed right that very second. That, coupled with the glow of my phone screen while I scroll the online shelves for gifts and treats, has turned Christmas planning into a nocturnal affair.

One hand cradling a wailing baby, the other navigating my online basket, I find myself placing orders for presents, decorations, and all the bits and bobs that make December feel like December. The next morning, of course, brings the financial hangover - the realisation that that purchase wasn’t a dream, and that my festive cheer has come at a price.
