The GOP can put dreams of a landslide on hold

Hold on to your hats, people. History is in the driver seat this summer. It’s got the roof down, the music jacked up and the tires screaming.

On Sunday, another epic event took the wheel of the presidential election as Joe Biden stepped aside for a new and younger Democratic nominee to take on Donald Trump in the fall.

For most Democrats, this was sweet deliverance not only from Biden’s all-too-frequent brain freezes and blank stares, but from the insurrection they ignited.

And if that had not been trouble enough, Trump had miraculously survived an assassin’s bullet and was freeze-framed in heroic pose — producing a fist-pumping photograph for the ages.

Taken together, those prior events had reenergized Republicans, demoralized Democrats, and left them staring at a bleak November.

It had begun to look like Trump would march through the battleground states on his way to a landslide on Nov. 5. Then Biden told us he is out.

You could watch the reaction on Sunday in real time, as the “likes” on the president’s tweet grew by 2,000 every 3 seconds. In less than two hours, his tweet had been viewed by 155 million people.

And here’s what we know: We know nothing.

No one knows what happens next. The days and weeks ahead are fraught with danger for both political parties.
