Trumpmentum—The View from Thailand

Living overseas is interesting and gives a unique perspective on events in one’s home country. I’ve been in Thailand the past 2 years, and have closely watched political events in America, obviously including this year’s Presidential race. America is my home. I can tell you almost nothing about politics in Thailand except that the country does have a king who is almost universally regarded as a doofus. But the government is basically “democratic.”

Regardless of that, living overseas does present the “forest and the trees” perspective, which may be good or bad. I can only read articles and watch videos, which gives me a “forest” view of the political scene. However, I’m not “on the ground” to view the individual trees and receive any “sense” or “feeling” of the mood of the country (one would probably have to travel around the nation a great deal to do that). There are advantages, I believe, to both viewpoints, but you’ll have to decide for yourself if there is any value to my commenting on the election from across the globe.

Being far away obviously limits one’s perception and personal experiences, but being too close to the action may warp one’s vision as well. If you are one of the people living in a city where Donald Trump has held a rally—and you almost surely attended—then no doubt you saw a huge crowd, tremendous excitement, and soaring emotions for the former President (at least, that is what I read about these rallies from Thailand,........
