Japan’s GCAP push signals a new security role beyond the U.S. alliance
Before heading to the Group of Seven summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visited her British and Italian counterparts in London and Rome for bilateral talks covering energy security, economic resilience and international crises, including Iran and Ukraine.
Japan also signed a broad economic security agreement with the United Kingdom focused on critical minerals, advanced technologies and supply-chain resilience, expanding cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, strategic resources and defense-related sectors. With Italy, Tokyo deepened cooperation in space, industrial innovation and economic security.
A central outcome of both meetings was the reaffirmation of political and economic support for the Global Combat Air Program, a trilateral initiative........
