Building Mental Wellness Through Autonomy

Next in our journey on mental wellness, we’re focusing on having a healthy sense of autonomy—having a good relationship with yourself. According to the British Psychological Association, autonomy means "feeling psychologically free and having the ability to control your life. In short, autonomy is all about having a choice and a voice. It fulfills an innate need to feel that we are acting of our own volition, allowing us to fully accept the consequences of our actions."

Part of having a good relationship with yourself is knowing your needs: what you want, what you don’t want, what your values are, and what your overall purpose is in life. Let's start with your overall purpose in life. Wait, are you thinking of moving on and not thinking about this? You're not alone! That's what many people say when I bring up the topic. Most people say they believe there is a purpose in life, but they don't have time to think about it. So maybe now is the time (or maybe not) to give some thought to your purpose and to develop your autonomy.
