It’s around 1 a.m. on a Wednesday, and while most of Lahore sleeps, Shaheer Majid is still awake, replying to a client query on Upwork. His roommate, Ahmed Mujtaba, checks the crypto market between chapters of a finance textbook. Across Pakistan’s university campuses, a quiet shift is underway. Students are no longer waiting for graduation to start earning. They’re building income streams while still attending lectures, and doing it on their own terms.

The shift is being driven by expanding internet access, a growing number of digital platforms, and a generation of students who see freelance work, e-commerce, and even trading as extensions of what they are already studying. Platforms that once felt out of reach are now just a download away. For many students, the laptop that once held lecture notes now holds a second income.
