Iran: Not a War, a Military Conflict? — Anything BUT Small Potatoes!
Call it a war, a military conflict, an intervention or something else entirely different—the terminology does little to change the human cost. People are dying, and the fighting has the potential to expand into a far larger regional conflagration.
Call it whatever you want—just don’t call it small!
Then the missiles started flying again. Tankers burned. Ballistic missiles streaked toward American ships and bases. Eighteen U.S. service members are dead. More than 800 have been wounded. Sailors are finishing deployments that stretch past nine months at sea. Families are absorbing the quiet damage that body counts never capture.
The Trump administration has increasingly avoided the word “war.” During a White House press briefing on September 3, 2026, Vice President JD Vance was asked whether the fighting with Iran could end before the November midterm elections.
His answer was blunt: “I wouldn’t call it a war.” Vance added, “Right now, there is no active shooting.”
The following day, September 4, President Donald Trump was questioned about Vance’s characterization during an Oval Office exchange with reporters. Trump defended his vice president’s terminology.

Within days, the relative calm had broken down. On September 5–6, the United States and Iran resumed direct attacks around the Strait of Hormuz, with Washington targeting Iranian oil tankers while Tehran fired missiles toward U.S. warships and attacked shipping.
On September 8, the U.S. military announced that it had destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after Iranian forces twice attempted to strike a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles. The following day, Iran claimed attacks on 10 vessels, including two American ships, and launched 20 ballistic missiles toward a U.S.-used base in Jordan; Jordan said 18 were intercepted.
Whatever terminology Washington........
