In Kashmir, we have grown used to discussing politics with frustration and disdain. Over time, many have accepted the idea that politics is a last refuge for the idle or unemployed.
Our turbulent history—marked by decades of political uncertainty, broken promises, and a widening gap between people and the institutions meant to serve them—makes this skepticism understandable. Yet remaining trapped in cynicism is dangerous. Regardless of our grievances, political engagement remains the only path to meaningful change.
The consequences of disengagement are visible. Voter turnout in Kashmir has plummeted over the decades, reflecting a deep loss of faith in mainstream politics and the electoral process. This withdrawal has not improved conditions; it has only created a vacuum that allows others to decide our fate without our input.
