Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy’s future in Congress has been an open question ever since he voted to convict Donald Trump at the conclusion of his second impeachment trial in 2021. Now, despite his years-long efforts to atone for that decision and ingratiate himself with Trump again, the president — who has been known to hold a grudge or two — has responded by trying to kill off Cassidy’s career.

On Saturday, Trump issued a full-throated and unexpected endorsement urging Louisiana Representative Julia Letlow to launch a Senate bid, calling Letlow a “TOTAL WINNER” who has “ALWAYS delivered for Louisiana, and would continue doing so in the United States Senate.”

“Should she decide to enter this Race, Julia Letlow has my Complete and Total Endorsement. RUN, JULIA, RUN!!!,” he wrote on TruthSocial Sunday. The president notably made no mention of Cassidy in the lengthy post.

Letlow, a Louisiana congresswoman, officially announced her plans to run for Senate Tuesday at a breakfast event in Baton Rouge, with Cassidy in the room.
