Most citizens still believe representative democracy is a good way to govern, but increasing shares of people are dissatisfied with how their country’s own democracy is working and support has grown for other forms of government, according to a Pew Research Center survey released Wednesday.

The nonpartisan organization, which reached adults in 24 countries across the world, found that majorities in each country surveyed think representative democracy is a somewhat or very good way to govern their country and more than three-quarters of respondents overall (77%) view it as a good form of government.

But other findings suggested some discontent with how representative democracy was working in practice. A median 59% of respondents are dissatisfied with how their democracy is functioning and nearly three-quarters (74%) believe “elected officials don’t care what people like them think.” And more than 80% of those surveyed in countries such as the United States, Argentina and Spain held that view about elected officials.
