Why is George Latimer so oddly silent about the Israel-Hamas conflict?Micah L. Sifry

Voters in New York’s 16th congressional district are in a very odd position as the June primary between incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman and challenger George Latimer, the Westchester County Executive, heats up. According to national political commentators across the spectrum, our district — which comprises all of lower Westchester south of 287 plus a smidge of the East Bronx down to Co-op City — is about to hold a referendum on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Political action committees with a big stake on that topic, on the right and the left, from AIPAC and Democratic Majority for Israel and the Orthodox Union’s Teach Coalition to the Working Families Party and Justice Democrats, are all investing millions of dollars to try to influence the outcome. Local voters who are used to primaries being sleepy affairs are about to experience a deluge of TV ads and other paid efforts to swing their decision. The primary, we are being told, will be a bellwether on the debate inside the Democratic party about everything from President Joe Biden to Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza.
