Opinion: How could a solidly GOP district elect 2 Dems?

As we wait to see who will control the Arizona Senate — Democratic Sen. Christine Marsh is hanging on by the tips of her fingernails — it’s worth taking a look at one of the surprises of Tuesday’s election.

District 17 is a southern Arizona legislative district gerrymandered specifically to favor Republicans.

Now it may well be the district that gives Democrats a share of control at the Arizona Legislature.

If the numbers hold, Democrats will snag two of the three seats in this Pima County-centered district.

Democrat John McLean, a retired businessman who was a Republican until the party’s lurch to the right prompted a switch, holds a 2-point lead over former........
