Maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait

The Taiwan Strait remains silent, if relatively, although more than 100 days have passed since Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te took office in May. Due to his repeated denial of “One China,” not a few observers have warned that a violent storm would blow from the mainland.

Right after Lai started his four-year term, in fact, China showed a strong will to retaliate against the Taipei government. When China staged an armed demonstration to blockade the Taiwan Strait, it seemed as if furious wind and waves would sweep the whole strait. China also announced imposing significant sanctions against a few American companies that sold arms to Taiwan. However, it appears to have ended up as posturing — at least for now.

Moreover, despite China’s continuous malign influence, the Lai administration........
