The concept of resilience takes on profound meaning when faced with the unimaginable—such as losing everything to fire. In Los Angeles, the devastating reality of wildfires is a stark reminder of nature’s power and violence. While I have been fortunate to remain in the safe zone, several of my friends were less lucky. Families across the Los Angeles area have seen their homes, belongings, and irreplaceable memories vanish in a matter of hours. Fire is a terrifying force that changes lives overnight, leaving a trail of destruction.

These moments of devastation compel us to put things into perspective. Material possessions can be replaced, but the bonds we form and the resilience we cultivate are what truly help us rebuild. For those who have experienced such loss, the journey to recovery begins not just with physical rebuilding, but with finding the strength to move forward.

Not everyone is equally resilient—some people are more likely to demonstrate resilience than others, and this likelihood depends on a combination of factors.
