Has Greta Thunberg now outgrown her own core cause?

Greta Thunberg built up her global following on one single claim of expertise. The environment. She claimed that the science of climate change was clear and all world leaders were not paying attention to it. However, she has never claimed expertise in international law, Middle Eastern history, counter-terrorism policy or diplomacy. Yet since October 2023, that is precisely the track she has decided to follow, and her ever-expanding list of causes raises an obvious question. What, beyond fame and a following, actually qualifies her to lead on any of it? Her ever-widening record since 7 October 2023 was not a one-off diversion from climate change, but a pattern of continually narrowing focus.

Declared Israel’s conduct in Gaza a “genocide,” a very specific legal term she (like many others currently prove) is not qualified to judge on, in a Guardian article co-authored just weeks after the Hamas murderous attacks.

Joined a Stockholm crowd chanting “Crush Zionism,” her understanding of Zionism plainly being so very obviously lacking.

Boarded two Gaza-bound flotillas, was intercepted twice, and accused Israel of “kidnapping” her. This language of hers sat very uneasily alongside the plight of the Israeli and other hostages actually held by Hamas. She was simply given sandwiches and escorted to a waiting flight as an unwanted ‛guest’. The Israeli hostages were tortured, abused, and many were murdered.
