The Japanese-made Type 88 surface-to-ship (SSM-1) missile has been in service for nearly 40 years, but it remains an effective weapon for targeting warships in littoral and near-coastal waters. That point was underscored in joint military exercises in the Philippines on Wednesday, when the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) employed the land-based anti-ship missile to sink a decommissioned Philippine Navy ship in the waters facing the South China Sea.
