Library helps you get growing

Calling all green thumbs – spring has arrived, and gardening season is just around the corner.

With April marking National Gardening Month, there’s no better time to explore the wealth of free resources available at the Brantford Public Library. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just getting started, the library offers tools and inspiration to help your garden thrive.

A great place to begin is the library’s ever-growing collection of gardening books. Award-winning writer Stephanie Hafferty’s The Productive Garden shows that self-sufficiency is within reach. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience, Hafferty shares how no-dig gardening can produce abundant food, reduce waste, save money, and nurture the soil for long-term sustainability.

For those interested in eco-conscious design, Kendra Wilson’s Gardenista: The Low-Impact Garden provides a comprehensive guide to creating beautiful, sustainable outdoor spaces. The book features garden tours from around the world, along with practical advice on soil health, water use, planting, and design, complemented by expert tips and vibrant photography.

Young gardeners are not left out. Stephanie Hathaway’s Nature School: In the Garden offers an engaging, hands-on introduction for children, exploring plant life, pollinators, soil, and seasonal gardening. It’s an excellent way to spark curiosity and foster a lifelong connection to the natural world.

In addition to print materials, the library provides a wide range of digital resources. With you library card, you can access popular gardening magazines through the Libby app by OverDrive, including Houseplants & Indoor Gardening, Your Perfect Garden, and Edible Gardening. PressReader also offers titles such as Amateur Gardening, The English Garden, Horticulture, and Garden Gate. Readers can even set up automatic downloads to stay up to date with the latest issues.

For those who prefer guided learning, the library’s Universal Class platform features expert-led online courses such as Introduction to Gardening, Vegetable Gardening 101, All About Herbs, and Basic Gardening and Plant Care. These self-paced courses make it easy to build skills from home.

Looking to get creative? Adults can register for the Tin Can Hanging Planters program on May 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the main branch. Participants will transform recycled materials into decorative planters – perfect for brightening any outdoor space.

With so many resources available, the Brantford Public Library makes it easy to grow your gardening knowledge this spring. Visit www.brantfordlibrary.ca to learn more and get started.
