We influence each other all the time. A friend asks you to come to dinner. Your romantic partner tells you they’re hurt by something you did. A salesperson talks your ear off about a car you are considering. A politician promises you the moon.
When do these forms of influence become manipulation?
While there is no single agreed-upon definition of manipulation in the literature, a key part of many definitions is that manipulation is a form of influence that interferes significantly with a person’s ability to decide for themselves. That is, when somebody uses aspects of another person’s psychology, such as their emotions, vulnerabilities, needs, or cognitive tendencies in ways that interfere with that person’s ability to think and decide for themselves.
Though some manipulative techniques are obvious, many are subtle, as we shall see in the next section.
