Fleming’s impact on Peterborough goes beyond the college

Quick now Canadian patriots, what do you recall about a certain immigrant to Peterborough named Sandford Fleming?

Probably very little, if you are like me, except that his name is on our community college.

We suffer from the fact that we know too little about Canada’s intriguing history, lively and interesting as it is. But that is not the fault of personable Lakefield writer and community leader John Boyko, who has written nine popular books telling the stories of our national exploits and colourful personalities. They include stories of Canada’s involvement in the Vietnam War and the American Civil War, of the maligned prime minister R.B. Bennett, and this new one on Fleming.

Boyko’s unforgettable telling of the story of polymath young Scot Sandford Fleming recalls how he came at age 18 to Peterborough to stay with his relative on Brock Street, the town doctor, after whom Hutchison House is named. The book is called “In Pursuit of Tomorrow,”........
