Desert Gardener: Elephants in the Sonoran Desert?
The Elephant tree is a rare plant found in the Sonoran Desert.
There are elephants in the Sonoran Desert, but they are not the African variety. Instead, they are desert plants called elephant trees. Their name comes from the tree’s swollen trunk that resembles an elephant’s massive leg. The Arizona Desert Museum studied the elephant tree and discovered its trunk is about 83% water, which is stored and used sparingly to keep the tree alive during summer and times of drought.
