EDITORIAL: Ban time-out boxes in schools

There are times like this when you shake your head and ask, “Is this really a thing? Do we really need a law telling us not to do this?”

Yes, it’s really a thing.

Some educators in at least one school district in the state apparently watched the scene in The Shawshank Redemption in which the warden puts Andy in “the hole,” and thought solitary confinement was an appropriate, safe and effective way to control and discipline elementary school children.

In the Salmon River School District last month, parents and other members of the community rightly lost their minds when they found out their district was placing elementary school students suffering from disabilities in small, padded wooden........
