There was something not quite right about the (over) reaction of MLAs to the Assembly’s remuneration board pay rise recommendation. The three-man board was created by legislation designed and voted for by MLAs.

Have they created a monster they can no longer control?

Proposed by Sinn Féin’s Sinead Ennis in her capacity as a member of the Assembly Commission, the relevant bill was introduced to the Assembly in February last year and gained royal assent seven months later. While it wasn’t given accelerated passage, it moved on the statute book relatively quickly and with comparatively little fuss.
