California family says home lab belonging to teen trying to cure cancer was misread by FBI

(KTLA) — A California family whose home was surrounded by FBI agents and SWAT Team members after “suspicious” items were found in its garage says there is nothing nefarious about the discovery.

The investigation started on Feb. 23 when the landlord of the property, located in the gated Altair community in Irvine, called police to report “suspicious” materials.

The FBI, along with Orange County Fire Authority personnel and the California National Guard’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team, responded to the property to investigate. Throughout the probe, which has now lasted a week, agents covered in hazmat gear have been seen entering the home and removing unknown items.

It was later revealed by Irvine police that the incident began “after a juvenile at the residence mixed unknown chemicals.”

“The specific substances involved, along with the surrounding circumstances, are being carefully and methodically evaluated by subject matter experts from multiple disciplines,” police said at the time.

In the wake of authorities descending upon the home, neighbors expressed shock, with one man telling Nexstar’s KTLA that “the people who live there were just a family,” he said.

“It wasn’t the type of house where people would come and go often,” said neighbor Ahmed Bajwa, who lives across the street. “It wasn’t anything that fits what you would think this type of [law enforcement] response would justify.”

Charles M. Ray, the attorney who represents the family who lives at the home, has spoken to the media about the situation, telling the Orange County Register that “this is someone who is going to help cure cancer one day. He is not a terrorist.”

“Ray described the equipment inside the teenager’s home-based laboratory as benign, including items such as Bunsen burners and other materials ‘found in a sixth-grade lab,'” the O.C. Register reported.

Ray also spoke with KTLA on Monday, further explaining what happened and how the 17-year-old at the center of all this is completely innocent.

“This is how it went down: there was a repair that needed to be done at the house, and over the course of that repair being conducted, the people that were there to check it out — I believe it was a small water leak or something to that effect — set it off the rails when it was reported,” Ray said.

The attorney described the young teen as “brilliant” and noted that he is about to graduate from college at the age of 17. He also runs a YouTube channel where he does science experiments in the family’s garage, and even when he’s not home, he is still “devoted to his studies and to developing educational content.”

“Really what we have here is this 17-year-old kid who is brilliant and just wrapping up college [who] wants to be a doctor one day, and he’s very interested in chemistry and biology,” Ray explained. “One of the experiments he was running was a synthesis of certain types of chemicals to create compounds and stuff like that. This is someone who wants to cure cancer one day; that’s all this is.”

KTLA was over the home at the center of the investigation on Wednesday morning. Footage showed several boxes and barrels in the garage and the driveway, which had a pickup truck towing a trailer parked in front of it.

At least two people, presumably investigators, were seen coming out of the garage, and a police squad car was parked near the home.

The sight is a big difference from last week, when there was a large law enforcement presence in the neighborhood, and authorities had the street blocked off.

Now, a week after the ordeal first began, attorney Ray said the family “looks forward to resuming their normal lives as soon as possible.”

“While the family maintains a deep respect for law enforcement and the immense responsibility officers carry in protecting our communities, it appears that this situation has been mischaracterized and escalated into something it simply is not,” he said in a written statement. “That possibility is being fully examined and investigated by this office as these events continue to develop. We are prepared to address any charge(s), if they are even brought, through the proper legal process and remain confident that the truth will prevail.”

KTLA reached out to the FBI for more information on the investigation, and a spokesperson said that they cleared the scene this weekend and that the Orange County Health Department officials are “following up to prepare [the home] for occupancy.”

The investigation remains ongoing. The FBI spokesperson confirmed that no arrests have been made.
