NGA won’t facilitate White House meeting after Moore, Polis blocked from attending
The National Governors Association (NGA) will no longer facilitate its annual meeting at the White House on Friday after President Trump rescinded invitations to Democratic Govs. Wes Moore of Maryland and Jared Polis of Colorado.
The White House will still host governors for a business breakfast Friday and a lavish dinner Saturday, an NGA spokesperson said Thursday, but the bipartisan group will not formally back the events, as it has in past years, because of the decision to exclude Moore and Polis.
“The White House will still be holding their meetings this week, but they have decided to not include all Governors. We have been consistent that the National Governors Association cannot participate in a meeting that does not welcome all governors,” NGA CEO Brandon Tatum said in a statement.
The White House initially broke with tradition last week by inviting only Republican governors to the Friday business meeting, a typically bipartisan gathering organized during the annual three-day NGA winter conference in Washington, D.C. The president also singled out Polis and Moore, barring them from Saturday’s dinner, a separate event at the White House intended for governors and their families.
But Trump seemed to walk back his position after the Republican NGA chair, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, warned that the group would not facilitate the Friday meeting if Democrats were not included, too. All Democratic governors, including Moore and Polis, subsequently received invitations to Friday’s meeting, and the NGA signed back on to facilitate.
An NGA spokesperson, however, said the White House later reached back out to Moore and Polis and revoked their invitations to the meeting.
“After briefly moving in the right direction last week, the White House IGA staff informed us through multiple phone calls that they have decided to depart from this longstanding tradition,” Tatum said.
“The NGA stands for all governors, and we cannot facilitate a White House meeting that excludes,” he continued. “Governors take seriously the responsibility to model the respectful, constructive leadership our country needs right now, and we will continue to work together on the issues that matter to the American people.”
Several Democrats had already declined to attend the Friday meeting, with some, like Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D), citing the “drama” surrounding the events and the fact that Moore and Polis were still barred from Saturday’s dinner.
But others saw the White House meeting as an opportunity to press the administration on issues that mattered to their states. It is unclear whether those Democrats still plan to attend.
Moore, the vice chair of the NGA, declined to comment. Polis, last year’s NGA chair, did not respond to a request for comment.
