Moore, Polis to attend governors meeting after White House reverses course

Democratic Govs. Wes Moore of Maryland and Jared Polis of Colorado said they will attend the National Governors Association (NGA) meeting with President Trump on Friday after the White House reversed course, once again, and extended an invitation to the pair, a source familiar told The Hill.

Moore, the vice chair of the NGA, and Polis made their announcements shortly just as the business breakfast was slated to begin.

“I will attend today’s business meeting with my colleagues at the White House. But let me be abundantly clear: I will not participate in political stunts,” Moore said in a statement ahead of the meeting.

“Americans are exhausted by the division and toxicity out of Washington, and we all pray for better. In that spirit, I look forward to clearly laying out what Marylanders and Americans need and hope to find a White House committed to delivering just that,” he continued.

“I’ve always said I’m willing to work with anyone to make our state better. After the White House finally made it clear National Governors Association (@NatlGovsAssoc) vice chair Governor Wes Moore (@GovWesMoore) and I were invited to the business session, we decided it was important to attend today’s meeting with fellow Governors of both parties to elevate the issues that Americans care about most and speak truth to power,” Polis posted on social platform X.

The Friday reversal comes a day after the NGA announced it would no longer facilitate the annual White House meeting because Trump, last week, rescinded invitations to Moore and Polis.

Trump had initially opted to invite only Republican governors to the traditionally bipartisan gathering, which coincides with the NGA winter meeting in Washington, D.C., but changed course after the Republican chair, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, said the NGA would not back the event, as it has in the past, unless all Democratic governors were included.

All Democratic governors subsequently received invitations to the meeting, but Moore and Polis later heard from the White House that their invitations had been rescinded.

Polis, who chaired the bipartisan group last year, said both Democratic governors are still barred from Saturday’s annual black-tie White House dinner, which has typically been for governors and their families. The other Democratic governors joined together to boycott the event, citing the exclusion of Moore and Polis.

“A week ago, the president broke a decades-long, bipartisan tradition and inexplicably disinvited me from the dinner on Saturday night. I thank all of my Democratic colleagues for standing with me,” Moore wrote in a statement.

“I remain ready and willing to find common ground, produce results for the people of Maryland, and fight to ensure my fellow governors can do the same for the people they represent,” he continued.

The Hill reached out to the White House for comment.
