Jeffries: Democrats willing to spend big to reshape Virginia congressional districts

Democrats are ready to spend big to boost a Virginia redistricting effort that could give the party four more House seats, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has said, amid the national battle over congressional lines ahead of the midterms.

“Whatever it takes,” Jeffries told CNN’s Manu Raju in an interview aired Sunday, when asked how much money Democrats are willing to put into the push in Virginia.

“We will spend tens of millions of dollars to make sure that the Republicans do not successfully manipulate voters in Virginia, and that voters have all of the information necessary to make a decision around whether they want Donald Trump to rig the midterm elections and halt the ability for the American people to decide who‘s in the majority, or whether the people of Virginia and the people of America should be the ones to decide,” the congressman said.

Virginia Democrats hold a six-seat majority out of the state’s 11 congressional districts, but they’re planning to put a constitutional amendment before voters this spring that could give them as many as four pickup opportunities this fall.

It’s the latest development in a national redistricting war sparked by mid-decade, GOP-friendly redistricting in Texas last year. California responded with a Democrat-led redraw aimed at offsetting the Texas changes, and both parties have since pursued other opportunities to get an edge ahead of the high-stakes midterms.

North Carolina, Missouri and Ohio have also passed new maps, while litigation led to a new map in Utah. State lawmakers in Florida expect a special session on redistricting in the spring that could add more seats for the GOP.

And lawmakers in the Maryland House have advanced a redistricting proposal that could boost Democrats, but it’s facing a hurdle in the state Senate, where the body’s Democratic president, Bill Ferguson, isn’t planning to bring it up for a vote.

“We know we have majority support right now, as we speak, in the Maryland state Senate. And all we’re asking President Ferguson to do is allow democracy to prevail. What that means is an up or down vote. One man shouldn’t stand in the way of the people of Maryland, through their representatives in the state Senate, being able to decide: should we go in this direction?” Jeffries said on CNN.

Jeffries said that he’ll “have to have a conversation” with Ferguson if the standoff continues, “but hopefully over the next few days, he’ll change his mind.”
