Chamber of Commerce: Tariffs ruling ‘welcome news’ for businesses, consumers

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce praised the Supreme Court’s Friday ruling, which halted the bulk of President Trump’s tariffs, as “welcome news” for businesses and consumers.

“Over the past year, the Chamber has been working with small and midsize businesses around the country that have seen significant cost increases and supply chain disruptions as a result of these tariffs,” Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer Neil Bradley said in a statement on behalf of the Chamber.

“Swift refunds of the impermissible tariffs will be meaningful for the more than 200,000 small business importers in this country and will help support stronger economic growth this year,” he said.

On Friday, Supreme Court justices rejected as unlawful Trump’s expanded use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on most countries.

“We claim only, as we must, the limited role assigned to us by Article III of the Constitution,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the decision. “Fulfilling that role, we hold that IEEPA does not authorize the President to impose tariffs.”

The Chamber, which represents the interests of nearly 3 million companies, has been critical of Trump’s tariffs from the get-go. In July, it filed an amicus brief arguing the president was overstepping his statutory authority and his actions were causing “irreparable harm to businesses of all sizes.”

“We encourage the administration to use this opportunity to reset overall tariff policy in a manner that will lead to greater economic growth, larger wage gains for workers, and lower costs for families,” Bradley said in the statement.
