Johnson says supplemental Pentagon funds ‘probably’ in reconciliation as Senate moves forward
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Wednesday said supplemental funding for the Pentagon due to strikes in Iran would “probably” be part of a second Republican-only reconciliation bill, and he is “glad” the Senate is moving forward on such a measure.
Johnson in a press conference said using the special reconciliation process — which bypasses the need to get Democratic support to meet the Senate’s 60-vote threshold — would be necessary because he does not think Democrats will vote for supplemental funding for the Department of Defense.
“I don’t even think they would agree to vote on a bill that would simply restock our munitions. We used some of those, as you know, in Operation Epic Fury, and we’ve got to do that. It’s a necessity,” Johnson said. “I don’t think we can count on their vote to do the simple, basic responsibility of Congress.”
