Animal shelter inundated with calls over fake AI dog photo
(KRON) – Dozens of dogs are waiting at San Jose Animal Care & Services shelter for forever homes, but a sad-looking dog named Lumi is not one of them.
Shelter workers said they have been bombarded by phone calls and messages from people concerned about Lumi. The wave of concern was triggered by a “false AI-generated” photo posted Sunday by a Facebook group called “Saving Shelter Dogs from Euthanasia,” according to the shelter.
In the photo, a small dog with white curly fur is huddled in the corner of a metal enclosure. The photo’s caption claims that the pooch was “dumped” and was in immediate risk of being euthanized. “She needs someone to walk in now and choose her before this becomes her final night,” the caption states.
Thousands of people from across the country wrote comments on the post, including offers to adopt Lumi.
One concerned Facebook user wrote, “Someone please save this sweetie she looks so sad.” Another said, “She’s so cute.” And a woman who lives in New York wrote, “Please don’t euthanize this beautiful little baby.”
Shelter officials explained the truth on Monday, writing, “Lumi was not at risk of being euthanized, has already been adopted and is in a permanent home. The post used Lumi’s name and ID number but included a photo of a different dog with AI.”
The same Facebook page previously posted false information about more animals at San Jose’s shelter using AI-generated images, according to city officials.
“The recent post has been widely shared, leading to a high volume of calls and messages. While we appreciate the community’s concern, misinformation creates unnecessary alarm and takes staff time away from caring for animals currently in our shelter,” San Jose Animal Care & Services wrote Monday.
People who would like to adopt a dog are encouraged to visit the shelter’s website directly for accurate information. The website has a long list of dogs that are in need of forever homes.
“Our kennels are overflowing with wonderful adult dogs who are patiently waiting for the loving families they deserve,” shelter officials wrote.
