Rep. Beyer Seeks September Hearings About AI Regulation

Rep. Don Beyer, a Democrat who is seeking a seventh term in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, is warning that lawmakers should act quickly to maintain control over the growth of artificial intelligence.

“Far too often Congress reacts AFTER a disaster. We must not only be reactive with artificial intelligence, we can’t wait for an AI catastrophe to spur a response,” he wrote on X.

Beyer is the co-chair of the Congressional Artificial Intelligence Caucus. His office told the Daily Signal that the issue is important enough that the House should hold discussions this month, before the official fall recess. “The need is urgent, and I think plenty of my colleagues in both parties agree that this must be a higher priority than the upcoming recess,” Beyer added in his post.

The House was scheduled to host various hearings through Thursday of this week before lawmakers leave Washington to hit the campaign trail. Congress began the month with a busy slate, but the House went into recess for most of last week and may not have time to accomplish much unless lawmakers add more sessions in September.
