Parties today are labels held together by a common dislike of the other side, kept alive by media that gives each party its own reality.
Negative partisanship is rooted in competition. Republicans might not support everything President Donald Trump does, but they absolutely detest his Democratic rivals and their ideas, pushing them to vote for Trump anyway. This relationship goes for both parties.
Such hostility expands past simple disagreement. A 2022 survey found 72% of Republicans view Democrats as more dishonest than other Americans. Similarly, 64% of Democrats believe Republicans are more dishonest.
