Trump’s Beef Plan Gives A Little To Everyone But Enough To No One

In the 1980s, Wendy’s struck advertising gold with “Where’s the Beef?” Today, families facing record beef prices — and ranchers trying to rebuild the smallest cattle herd in roughly 75 years — are asking, “How much for beef?”

Years of drought, wildfires, disease, and strong demand have pushed beef prices higher. Democrats call those prices evidence that President Donald Trump’s economic agenda is failing, putting the administration under pressure to help consumers without hurting American ranchers.

The White House’s response was to expand access to lower-tariff imports of lean beef trimmings from Argentina in February. These trimmings are generally mixed with fattier American beef to make ground beef, so the policy was intended to increase near-term supply in the part of the market most visible to families.

Then, in August, Trump announced a second round of reduced tariffs on Argentine beef imports. This time, to the tune of 300,000 metric tons of ground beef, more than three times the amount of imported beef authorized earlier this year.
