Seattle-headquartered fashion juggernaut Nordstrom announced Thursday a return to downtown San Francisco with plans to open a location of its Nordstrom Rack discount store on Stockton Street near Union Square. 

Nordstrom and San Francisco have had a long relationship, but in recent years, it has felt like the brand has forsaken the city. The closure of its flagship Bay Area store at the now-shuttered Westfield San Francisco Centre in July 2023 dealt a crushing blow. It surrendered its Market Street Rack location, across the street from the mall, that same year. In August, Mayor Daniel Lurie announced that the store would become 136 apartments.
