Sports radio station KNBR-AM/FM is once again shaking up its midday show, this time bringing back a host it laid off less than two years ago.
KNBR has let go of both Greg Papa, the 49ers’ primary play-by-play broadcaster and a longtime Bay Area sports media figure, and Greg Silver, the other host on the midday “Papa & Silver” show, SFGATE has learned. In their place, John Lund will be returning to KNBR to host a new 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. show called “Fair and Biased with John Lund.”

Papa has been a longtime sports radio host and a play-by-play broadcaster for nearly every Bay Area sports team over the decades. Papa had left the station temporarily last summer when he announced a cancer diagnosis. He returned to KNBR’s airwaves part-time last fall when his cancer was in remission, called one 49ers game on the airwaves in December and had a successful bone marrow transplant in the spring.
But as the San Francisco Chronicle detailed over the weekend, Papa was hospitalized for more than two months this spring with a number of health issues, including lung failure. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)........
