CHEERS AND JEERS: Jeers to P.E.I. government for lack of a Sunshine List
Jeers to P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz and Finance Minister Jill Burridge for coming up short on a Sunshine List for P.E.I. disclosing the province’s highest paid civil servants. The list, which is supported by the auditor general and was mused about briefly by the premier, would give transparency to P.E.I. residents about where their tax dollars are being spent. The disclosure would point definitively to who the highest-earning civil servants are in P.E.I., and whether friends of government are earning figures above non-supporters. It could help make plain any equality issues, if people of different genders or other minorities with the same level of experience make less than their colleagues. While such information is available in most other provinces, Burridge told reporters that P.E.I.’s population size is a factor in the decision not to list names and salaries, stating, “If we do a Sunshine List, you know, that could be your neighbour.” That seems a poor excuse to hide what should be public information.
