City Hall entrance to be transformed

Proposals to build a ramp and lift at the main entrance to City Hall alongside five new toilets on the ground floor foyer have been approved by planning officials.

The proposed accessibility improvements came after the Labour-led Norwich City Council unveiled plans to revamp the grade II listed building last year.

Designs explain minimal alterations would need to be made to the building - with an already existing light well used to house the ramp, preserving the building's character.

The toilets in the foyer will also be single occupancy and accessible to all.

A wheelchair lift is also part of the plans which were shaped by feedback from a series of consultations.

The scheme is in line with Norwich City Council's plans for a major revamp of City Hall.

The plans explain: "These initiatives build upon the council’s commitment to a phased approach for City Hall refurbishment."

The council says investing in its headquarters will protect the building's future while bringing in an economic boost of at least £53m.
