'Outstanding' school could get new facility for young SEND children

Norfolk County Council wants to create the 16-place specialist hub for SEND children at West Earlham Infant and Nursery School.

The Scarnell Road school is rated as outstanding by inspectors and already has two classes providing support for SEND children.

Conservative-run County Hall wants to create a dedicated facility at the school for such children, known as a Specialist Hub of Inclusive Practice (SHIP)

The hub, for children aged two to seven, would mean SEND children would have access to individual and small group support, while still being within a mainstream school.

Pupils would not need an Education Health and Care Plan to attend the SHIP, with placements offered by Norfolk County Council via an admissions panel.

Qualified teachers will manage the SHIP, which the council hopes will open in September, following refurbishment of existing buildings.

Consultation is under way, with a drop in event at the school from 2.15pm until 3.15pm on Tuesday.

Online consultation, running until March 27, is at https://norfolk.citizenspace.com/childrens-services/westearlhamship
