A massive flash flood triggered by a landslide near the Nepal-Tibet border has killed more than 150 people and left hundreds missing. At least 133 Indian pilgrims on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra remain unaccounted for, while roads, bridges and hydropower projects have suffered extensive damage. India has sent relief materials and medical supplies to Kathmandu, while Bihar has placed several districts on alert as floodwaters entered the Gandak river system.

New Delhi: A devastating flash flood near the Nepal-Tibet border has caused widespread destruction across Nepal. The disaster has killed more than 150 people, while hundreds remain missing. The floods have also affected Tibet and raised concerns in Bihar after water entered the Gandak river system.

A powerful landslide near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered the disaster. According to the US Geological Survey, the landslide produced a seismic signal similar to that of a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.

Officials believe the landslide may have involved a glacier collapse. A large volume of ice, rocks, mud and water entered the Lhende Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River.

Rasuwa and Dhading were among the worst-affected districts. The flood entered the Trishuli River through Timure in Rasuwa and spread towards Nuwakot, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahu and Nawalparasi East.

Videos from Nepal showed settlements under water, vehicles swept away and bridges collapsing under the force of muddy floodwaters. The impact stretched across areas located between about 70 km and nearly 200 km from Kathmandu.
