Liverpool 'overrun' by rats as 'bins are an all-you-can-eat rat buffet'

Liverpool ECHO readers are unsurprised to hear concerns are growing in the city over a “rat feeding frenzy” after rodents were spotted gnawing through residents’ bins in one part of the city. Local resident Bob Pointing contacted the ECHO after discovering a live rat inside his purple general waste wheelie bin outside his home.

He said: “The rat I saw was trapped, and I couldn’t see how it had got in as the bin was empty and the lid was firmly closed. Then I noticed a very small hole which (pest control) later told me is a common entry point for rats. I had always assumed our purple bins in Liverpool were rat proof, but clearly they are not.”

Mr Pointing also raised concerns about the council’s plan to introduce food waste collections, pointing out that rats could still access the bins.

He added: “The rat population is increasing in Liverpool, which we are constantly told is because people are still putting out loose bin bags and overloading bins, making food available to rats—and gulls, incidentally. People are careful about depositing food waste, but it........
