I’ve been a full-time journalist for more than three years now, and while I’ve told plenty of good news stories in that period, I have inevitably also spent a lot of time uncovering, reporting on, and analysing the instances when things have gone very badly wrong.

Some weeks I spend most of my working time deconstructing and rebuilding spreadsheets of official data in pursuit of fresh insights, or trawling through dozens of documents released in response to an FOI request, and few go by without at least a couple of video calls, which I do in the same spare room from which I taught my students during two years of pandemic-era college closures.

But I also get to go places and talk to people and call it work.
