People who drop litter from their cars have been slammed after more than two sacks of rubbish were picked up from Church Lane in Toft Monks, near Beccles.

The village runs along the busy A143.

The discarded waste included drink cans, McDonald's packaging and bagged dog mess.

The rubbish was picked up by community members, parish councillors, and children of Glebeland Community Primary School.

Mark Hurrell, chairman of Toft Monks Parish Council, said: "This litter pick came about from the school wanting to interact with the community and suggested this as a good thing to do, both for the children and the village.

"It was a great success and the parish council will be looking to repeat the exercise with our parishioners on a wider scale taking in more of the village and in particular the main road.

"Regarding people who litter in our village, I find them selfish and lazy, please take your rubbish and dog poo bags home.

"Rubbish from cars seems to be a habit as the number of times we see the same items at the same spots, suggesting a lot of it is the same culprits regularly taking the same route."

The clean-up was organised through the Big South Norfolk Litter Pick initiative, with the district council supplying litter pickers and hi-vis clothing for volunteers.

Children, teachers, and locals met at St Margaret's Church before working their way up Church Lane towards Clinks Care Farm, a social enterprise supporting disadvantaged people.

Julianne Smith, a concerned local, said: "Litter continues to be a problem in rural villages, often thrown from car windows or dumped.

"It is so lovely to see strong links being forged between the school, the church, the parish council, and the parishioners of Toft Monks."

Young volunteers from Glebeland Community Primary School received special medals to celebrate their commitment to keeping their village clean.
