Two sofas and rubbish among waste dumped across village
With fly-tipping and general litter dumping becoming more and more of a problem across the UK, councillors and volunteers united in an effort to try to address the issue in the village of Gisleham, south of Lowestoft, at the weekend.
A successful litter pick was held for three hours on Saturday morning as councillors from Gisleham Parish Council and volunteers teamed up to clear a mound of waste that had been dumped in the village.
Using equipment from East Suffolk Services, the councillors and village volunteers cleared the roads and lanes in Gisleham.
A Gisleham Parish Council spokesman said: "Two dozen sacks were filled with general litter, including sweet and food wrappers, drink and gas canisters and general household waste.
"Several instances of fly-tipping - including two sofas, boxes of tiles and building construction waste - were also reported to East Suffolk Council."
With East Suffolk Council treating the problem of fly-tipping "very seriously" anyone caught illegally dumping waste can be prosecuted.
It said: "To help us to respond to incidents of fly-tipping promptly and effectively, please do not hesitate to report an incident to us.
"If we don't know about it, we can't deal with it."
Incidents of fly-tipping can be reported to East Suffolk Council by submitting a fly-tipping or litter report online via its website or contact the Customer Services Team directly.
