Fears over speeding motorists on road set for more than a hundred homes

Neighbours on Green Lane West, in Rackheath, say drivers speed down their quiet village street, which has both 30 and 40mph restrictions as well as a give-way bay.

The road is also set to be used as an access point to Norfolk Homes' development of 143 houses.

Along with their concerns over a lack of schools and surgeries to cope with the housing boom, neighbours on Green Lane West are worried the scheme will also bring more speeding drivers.

John Plume, who moved to the area 38 years ago with his wife, Alison Plume, said the additional homes will make the road "more dangerous".

He said: "There have been numerous head-on collisions because they do not know they have to give way further up."

Mrs Plume added: "I find all the developments a bit depressing. We've spent more than 30 years looking over the fields."

Sammi Beck, a nurse who lives with her mum, Gill Ramsay, said: "The speeding has been getting really bad and to be fair, when they put in the NDR it took a lot of the traffic, but this road still gets used.

"We've had a number of collisions and it's not something that will improve with the new homes. The roads around here are just not geared up for it."

Noel King, who is 81 years old, said: "My lady friend was standing on the pavement near the road and this driver zoomed past. He had to be doing about 70mph and of course it will only get worse with the new homes."

Norfolk Homes has applied to Broadland District Council to build 143 homes on land east of Green Lane West.

The six hectares of land earmarked for the scheme is currently farmland and is near the former Rackheath airfield, where almost 4,000 additional homes could also be built.
