A lifelong fascination is exploring apocalyptic fiction for hints and heads-up about real world calamity. I've long believed such writers and content creators would be hailed as prophets or divine warners in ancient times.
Which brings me to my latest find, apocalyptic YouTube channels. I came across this genre last year. It's a continuation of apocalypse themed short stories first listened to on that platform during depressing depths of the pandemic shutdowns.
Exploring how attention absorbing technology can potentially overwhelm free will
Since boyhood, I have felt visions of sentient simians, unfed undead or virus infused vampires are very real fears conveyed through considerable creative license. Dread of a cold war going hot, of a ruling class dethroned or something from another world mobilizing corpses are recurrent themes.
An interesting trend on apocalyptic YouTube channels are nocturnal aliens or inter-dimensional beings striking while emergency alerts warn citizens not to go outside.
Or don't look out the window.
Refuse to open doors to familiar voices.
Avoid staring at unidentified entities waiting for victims.
Nor stare into skies filled with strange energies/ eager to harvest human consciousness. In our emerging 'AI' or artificial intelligence-reloaded reality, this genre bears close watching.
Conventional folks logically ask, 'What does all this stuff mean?' Good question.
Initially, I think it's exploring how attention absorbing technology can potentially overwhelm free will. Think suspicion of Chinese-style social credit scores limiting one's access to upward mobility, transit, online transactions and access to public spaces. That's my non 'sci-fi' guess at first blush.A 'sci-fi' hunch is these channels are preparing us for encounters with things normally considered to be fictional.
Time will tell which theory is true.
Speaking of theories, here's an 'oldie but a goodie' to use a classic phrase
I'd say they're right on time. It's also high time we paid closer attention
I know 'pod people' depicted in the 1956, 1978 and 2007 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' science fiction movies represented communism in a space creature format. The idea was originally presented in the 1955 book, 'The Body Snatchers', by Jack Finney.
Mind control and absolute authoritarianism are very real threats. We had front row seats for how 'deplatforming', 'debanking', 'shadow banning' and combatting 'disinformation', in other words, stealth government oversight of central social media sites changed what wary people posted in order to stay 'platformed'.
There's rich material to be considered here. Privacy, free speech and identity are upgrading faster than governments and constituents can comprehend.
During a time of profound flux, is it any wonder an interesting trend has emerged on apocalyptic YouTube channels?
I'd say they're right on time. It's also high time we paid closer attention.
Everyone must decide what is the message of these chilling warnings: alien mind control, demonic possession or smart technology overriding not-so-smart people.
