GPs across England have agreed to new contract changes designed to "bring back the family doctor" and eliminate the "8am scramble" for appointments, the Government has announced. The British Medical Association (BMA), the doctors' trade union, and the Government came to this agreement on Thursday, which will see an additional £889 million in funding by the year 2025 to 2026.

The Department of Health and Social Care has said that the updated contract will "free up doctors from red tape and box-ticking targets", allowing them to focus more on patient care. Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting announced the deal, emphasising that "rebuilding the broken NHS" begins with GPs and saying that patients should be able to book appointments easily, in their preferred way, and with their usual doctor if they wish.
