Bell: Big savings on auto insurance for Alberta drivers — the numbers
Alberta’s Automobile Insurance Rate Board rolls out the report and boy is it a doozy.
Being on the rate board’s mailing list, I get a copy of the report, and having fought for lower auto insurance premiums and appealed to the premier on the issue, I am salivating over the chance to share some of the high points.
The rate board says the numbers are solid and apply starting Jan. 1, when the province’s new auto insurance system kicks into high gear, a system the injury lawyers do not like.
“These are no longer theoretical numbers. They are based on hard rate filings by insurers so we know what the price is going to look like,” says Heather Mack of the rate board.

“The savings will be passed on to Alberta drivers.”

For the average driver, the savings are $297 a year, or 13.7 per cent.
But that’s the tip of the old iceberg.
The rate board came up with profiles of typical drivers with typical vehicles and insurance companies........
