Indonesian authorities have carried out one of the country’s largest drug seizures after discovering 2.6 metric tons of liquid methamphetamine aboard a Tanzanian-flagged vessel, highlighting the growing challenge posed by international maritime trafficking networks. The seizure, announced by Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency on August 18 and reported by state news agency Antara, resulted in the arrest of 10 crew members.

The massive haul was discovered aboard the MV Ocean Porter, where authorities found liquid methamphetamine concealed in eight water barrels and inside the vessel’s water tank. Investigators also discovered a 40-foot container containing 157 boxes of illegal cigarettes, adding another layer to the suspected illicit activity aboard the ship.

All 10 crew members arrested in connection with the operation are Myanmar nationals. The arrests and seizure are expected to form the basis of further investigations into the origin, intended destination and wider network behind the shipment.

The scale of the seizure is particularly significant because liquid methamphetamine can represent a substantial quantity of illicit narcotics while being transported in ways designed to avoid immediate detection. Concealing the substance in ordinary-looking water containers and a vessel’s water tank demonstrates the difficulties faced by authorities attempting to monitor maritime routes used for illegal trafficking.
