MULCAIR: It's time for Elizabeth May to up her game

Elizabeth May is by far the most experienced party leader in this campaign. She has been hammering home variations on the same themes for decades as an activist and as a politician. She can emote with the best of them.

Because she has, for most of that time, been a one-woman show, she’s never developed the knack of sounding out others on what she proposes to say and it has, at times, gotten her into trouble. Her Green Party supporters love the fact that she says what’s on her mind, but for the average voter that doesn’t mean saying the first thing that pops into your mind.

She also seems infinitely capable of shape-changing her message depending on her audience. To a group of nuns, the feminist May once denounced a “frivolous right to choose” and said that no one in their right mind is in favour of abortion. She’s tried to say that that’s not what she meant but young progressives have told me that they hesitate to move to........
